The deep web refers to parts of the internet not accessible through standard search engines like Google, Bing, and Yahoo. This includes unindexed pages, paywalled sites, private databases, and the dark web. Search engines use bots to crawl the web, but only index a small fraction (estimated at less than 1%) of all internet content, known as the surface web.
The deep web includes legitimate content like email messages, chat messages, private social media content, electronic bank statements, EHRs, and other content accessible through the internet. Paywalled sites and fee-for-service sites like Netflix are also inaccessible to search engine bots.
The deep web has its benefits, as it reduces irrelevant search results and protects privacy by preventing search engine bots from accessing personal information.
