If this is your first time to feed your cats raw food, it is recommended to give them chicken meat. For your first try, feed them chicken thighs with bones so you won’t need to supplement your pet’s meal with calcium. Here’s a step-by-step guide on what to prepare and how to go about the process:
1. Make sure that your work area is organized and neat. It is best not to allow your pets near you because they might get tempted to eat ingredients even before you are done. Put your apron and gloves.
2. Discard up to 25 percent of the bone from the total percentage of the meal you’ll use. The goal of this is to keep the ratio between the phosphorous and calcium right. If you are using 10 pieces of thighs, this means that you have to discard the bone from 2 thighs. If you have a fat cat, you have to discard all skin of the meat before you weigh it. If your cat’s weight is normal, you can discard the skin from half of the meat you’re using.
3. Weigh the meat to get the exact amount you need. Rinse meat in running water to clean any bacteria on the surface.
4. Open the supplement capsules, except the fish oil capsules. Put the powder in a bowl and throw away the empty caps. Add water and egg yolks. Whisk until combined and slurry.
5. Slice the part of each thigh with the most meat. Cut the meat into bite-size pieces or even smaller if your cat is still not used to eating chunky meat. Set aside the chunked meat
6. Set the meat grinder and put a bowl beneath its outlet. Feed the rest of the thighs including the bones through the machine, followed by the chicken heart, liver, and fish oil capsules. It is okay to put the whole capsules since the gelatins caps are edible.
7. Add the slurry mixture to the ground meat. Stir in the psyllium husk and chunked meat. Mix well until combined.
8. Divide the mixture into serving portions. A good idea to get this done is to put them in an ice cube tray and freeze. You can opt to keep them in an airtight container and store in the fridge if you’ll be using them immediately or up to 2 days. Thaw the frozen portion before using.
9. Wash the grinder parts manually. Let them dry and store in a safe place. You can follow the same procedures and use the same ingredients, except for the meat. Aside from chicken thighs, you can use the following meats in preparing this recipe for raw cat food: Whole chicken. This refers to a dressed chicken without feather, feet, and head. Chop off the backbone and neck to reduce its bone content. Add the organs in grinding the meat.
You may need a larger grinder for this purpose since it has larger bones. Rabbit. Use a dressed rabbit without feet, fur, and head. Cornish hen, quail, pheasant, and duck. Use the whole, dressed bird, including the organs. If the bird didn’t come with the organs, you can still use chicken liver and hearts. Turkey. If using the whole turkey, discard the wings and neck. Keep the total percentage of bone at around
10 percent. Use turkey hearts and livers. You can add chicken hearts and liver to get the right quantities.
